Title:                Port Engineer
Position:         Full-time Salaried/Exempt
Reports to:     Director – Engineering 
Division:         River
Location:        Paducah, KY
 
Position Summary: 
The Port Engineer will manage the repair and maintenance of river vessels, work closely within their specific Vessel Management Team “VMT” to provide the best possible utilization rate while controlling budget and cost.  The position will provide the required expertise advice and planning for the running vessel engineers and prepare/plan for any shipyard maintenance in close partnership with the Shipyard Project Manager.   The Port Engineer role represents an exciting opportunity for individuals who enjoy detailed troubleshooting and boat management, vendor negotiations, problem solving and developing an intimate understanding of the complex mechanical systems and structures in a large horsepower towboat.
 
Principal Responsibilities:
  • Provide shore side engineering support to fleet (mechanical, electrical, HVAC, general repairs, and technical support).
  • Supervise, coach, and train shore-side mechanics and vessel engineers.
  • Specify machinery and equipment for replacement and new construction.
  • Develop maintenance and repair projections.
  • Formulate dry-docking plan in coordination with the Port Captains and Project Managers.
  • Visit vessels in operation for repair and preventive maintenance planning.
  • Assist in advanced troubleshooting of machinery and equipment as required.
  • Communicate and coordinate all work and plans with other departments.
  • Travel as needed to vessels and shipyards in performance of duties, including out-of-town stays.
  • Observe and follow and enforce all safety rules and procedures, including wearing required personal safety equipment and proper use of equipment and tools.
  • Conduct performance evaluations on vessel engineers within VMT.
  • Manage maintenance budgets within VMT
  • Direct engagement in the Engineer Trainee Program
 
Qualifications:
  • Marine Engineering or related technical degree preferred.
  • Good working knowledge of marine mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.
  • Excellent driving record and ability to travel up to 50%.
  • Must be willing to stand weekend/evening duty.
  • Knowledge of USCG and Sub Chapter M rules and regulations preferred.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License.
