Title:                    Director of Wheelhouse Readiness and Training
Position:             Full-Time/Salaried Exempt
Reports to:        SVP of Vessel Operations

Location:            Paducah, KY
Principal Responsibilities:
  • Assess and train management and navigation skills of Wheelhouse personnel
    • Continuously improve, develop, coordinate, and administer Wheelhouse orientation training for new Wheelmen and ongoing training for current Wheelmen
    • Conduct check rides on newly hired and newly turned loose Wheelmen
    • Generate appropriate Operational Skills Assessment documentation
    • Develop and perform appropriate wheelhouse management audits and conduct on-the-spot training (as needed) that include GAR SAFE, Rose Point, Rules of the Road, Boat Log, V365, PBI Onboard, Resource Management, River Condition Summary, Lock Assist Info and Use,  “While you were out” and all other applicable SMS Protocols and Job Aids.
    • Document mariner’s proficiency in other areas not included in OSA
    • Coordinate boarding & departures with crewing to minimize transportation cost
    • Complete 6 to 9 vessels per month (2 or 3 days per vessel)
    • Oversee and assess pilots selected to attend TRANSYS simulator training in Houston, TX
  • Implement training of lock assist guidance to drive down tug assist costs
  • Oversee Wheelhouse qualification documentation entries and changes
  • Participate/attend office meetings pertinent to job scope
  • Evaluate and recommend company or fleet wide training needs
  • Serve as liaison between vessel and shore side personnel
  • Aid vessel compliance with all regulatory, customer, and company requirements
  • Possess a United States Coast Guard Merchant Mariners License
  • Master Towing Vessel license preferred
  • 10+ years of vessel operations experience on the Inland waterways
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Microsoft Office skills
  • Well-versed on regulatory requirements and vessel inspections
  • Demonstrated skills in supervising groups of employees, their training and development
  • Proven history of problem resolution skills
