Port Captain - River 2021
Title: Port Captain
Position: Full-time/Salaried Exempt
Reports to:
Sr VP of Operations
Division: River
Location: Paducah, KY
Principal Responsibilities:
Manage daily operations of vessels applying the Core Principles (Ton Miles, Smart Miles, Safe Miles, People).
Complete daily voyage plan for vessels including: ensuring tow sizes are appropriate, analyzing results and reporting anomalies to Sr. VP of Operations, tracking miles made (planned vs. actual), monitoring tug assists & following policy, tracking reasons for plan deviations, etc.
Develop and implement policies and procedures to enhance safety and efficiency in the operation, preventing incidents, injuries, and spills.
Investigate incidents and injuries and file appropriate paperwork as required.
Ensure all navigation notification systems are up-to-date and deployed to the vessels.
Ensure Safety Management System is fully implemented and complied with on the entire vessel.
Appropriately deploy vessel crews ensuring experience levels meet operational requirements.
Ensure fully qualified Captain, Pilot, Chief Engineer, and Deck Crew are onboard each vessel (i.e., valid credentials, etc.).
Lead Vessel Management Team to ensure goals are achieved.
Make frequent on-board vessel inspections and ensure vessels are operationally equipped and capable for the intended voyage.
Ensure vessels are operating within budget.
Ensure 100% of vessels are participating in the Safety Awards Program.
Monitor river conditions and make available information necessary to support navigational decisions.
Respond to vessels emergencies minimizing vessel down time, providing onsite supervision and direction.
Administer company policies, including disciplinary action as needed, and conduct performance evaluations.
Represent and articulate Company positions in response to U.S. Coast Guard or regulatory agency initiatives.
Assure vessel compliance with all governmental regulations and Company policies.
Serve as primary liaison between vessel management and shore side personnel.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
High School education minimum.
Possess a U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariners License, Master Towing Vessels license preferred.
5-10 years of vessel operations experience on the inland waterways.
Tanker/Barge experience not required but preferred.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Must be a self-starter with ability to perform a variety of complicated tasks with moderate supervision.
Proficient with Microsoft Office.
40% travel to vessels. (Must have a valid driver’s license.)
Must be willing to stand weekend/evening duty.
Must have working knowledge of modern navigation software.
Well versed on regulatory requirements and vessel inspections.
Demonstrated skills in supervising a large group of employees, training, and employee development.
