Title: Director of Compliance

Position: Full-time Salaried/Exempt

Reports to: SR VP - Operations

Division: Gulf-Inland

Location: Harahan, LA


Job Responsibilities:

  • Primary responsibility for maintaining and administering the safety management systems (SMS) for Marquette Gulf-Inland and Marquette Offshore.
  • Evaluates developments in industry, Coast Guard, customer and other regulatory and compliance requirements.
  • Works together with Operations to identify and implement necessary changes to the SMS.
  • Manages all SMS documentation.
  • Formulates and suggests work safety standards and enforces procedures. Risk prevention areas include: hazardous material exposure, accidents, fires, or other unsafe conditions. 
  • Tests compliance on SMS in partnership with Operations.
  • Management and development of VQSE team to ensure department goals are achieved and to reinforce positive relationships between shore-based and vessel-based teams.
  • Overall management of Sub Chapter M implementation and management.
  • Responsibility for maintaining regulatory vessel schedules for compliance with Sub Chapter M, SIRE (Ship Inspection Report Program), and ISM (International Safety Management Code) and for driving successful results.
  • Primary responsibility for incident investigations, root cause analysis, internal and external communications regarding incidents and tracking and assessing trends for continuous improvement opportunities. 
  • Partners with Safety and Operations to develop and implement education and training materials in furtherance of the above.
  • Maintains awareness of amendments to OSHA and USCG regulations and makes recommendations for their implementation injury and property damage reports.
  • Analyzes/Assesses root cause and causal factors and develops preventive and corrective actions, tracking progress of same.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the SR VP of Gulf-Inland Operations.
  • Serves as back-up DPA (Designated Person Ashore).


  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, or related field strongly preferred.
  • 5+ years in Marine industry required.
  • Experience managing people and building strong teams.
  • Strong communication (written and oral) skills required.
  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office with strong computer skills.
  • Travel 20%; regularly visit vessels in response to audit and emergency response requirements.
  • Knowledge of TMSA requirements, risk assessment, and root cause analysis systems.
